U.S. Citizenship Interview Day Checklist (2025 Civics Test)

Use this the day of your naturalization interview to stay organized and confident.

1. Documents to Bring

Bring originals listed on your notice; keep them easy to access.

  • Interview appointment notice (Form N-652 or USCIS interview notice)
  • Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
  • Passport(s) — current and expired, if available
  • State ID or driver’s license
  • Any additional documents USCIS requested in writing
  • Marriage certificate / divorce decree (if applicable)
  • Proof of tax filing (if requested)
  • Selective Service registration (if applicable)

Organize these in a folder or envelope so you can find them quickly.

2. Before Leaving Home

  • Review your Form N-400 answers (names, addresses, travel, work, family).
  • Review civics topics so ideas are familiar.
  • Eat/drink beforehand; dress neatly and comfortably.
  • Plan your route and arrive at least 30 minutes early.

3. At the USCIS Office

  • Check in as directed on your notice.
  • Silence your phone.
  • Go through security and follow instructions.
  • Wait patiently until your name is called.

4. During the Interview

General Interview Portion

  • Listen carefully; answer clearly and honestly.
  • If you do not understand, ask the officer to repeat or rephrase.
  • Answer only what is asked; keep responses short.

Civics Test Portion (applications filed on/after Oct 20, 2025)

  • Spoken test: up to 20 civics questions from 128 possible.
  • You must answer at least 12 correctly to pass.
  • The officer stops when you reach 12 correct or 9 incorrect (may end early).
  • Special consideration: age 65+ and 20+ years as a permanent resident take a shorter set (6 of 10 to pass).

5. After the Interview

  • You will be told if your case is approved, continued, or denied.
  • If approved, you’ll get instructions for your Oath of Allegiance ceremony.
  • If more info is requested, follow instructions carefully and meet the deadline.

6. Helpful Tips for Success

  • Speak slowly and clearly; perfect English is not required.
  • Keep answers short and direct.
  • Be honest; do not guess if unsure.
  • Stay calm and respectful; one missed question does not equal failure.
